The State Duma adopted a statement on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations

The statement affirms the inadmissibility of giving the majority of senior positions in the UN Secretariat to the US citizens and representatives of states loyal to Washington, as such a situation can lead to the dominance of one country and undermines the principle of multilateral cooperation

On Tuesday, September 15, members of the State Duma at the plenary meeting adopted a statement ”On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations.“

It underlines that the deputies ”have consistently supported actions aimed at strengthening the coordinating role of the UN in international affairs and ensuring equal cooperation between states within the framework of this universal Organization.“

“Hiding behind “noble” words about the need to improve the UN effectiveness and promoting initiatives to reform the organization, several Western states, guided by the United States of America, often seek to reformat this unique Organization to fulfill their own perceived interests,” the text of the document also says.

The parliamentarians are convinced that ”the current Washington’s policy towards the United Nations once again confirms the destructive nature of US actions in the international arena, including, by exerting pressure and introducing illegitimate unilateral sanctions on an extraterritorial principle against inconvenient states.“

“Attempts to discredit the Russian Federation or any other member state of the UN Security Council, or to limit their representation in the United Nations, as well as speak in terms of “bad” and “good” states basing on the principle of relevance to the US interests are counterproductive and contradict the fundamental basis and principles of the United Nations“, stressed the members of the State Duma.

The statement emphasizes the conviction of the Russian parliamentarians that the UN is playing the central coordinating role in international relations. The deputies support sustained commitment to the goals of the United Nations and the principles of international law and the UN Charter, including the sovereign equality of states and non-interference in their internal affairs, as well as settlement of international disputes by peaceful means, and the fulfillment in good faith of the international obligations.

“The State Duma considers it necessary to strengthen the United Nations as an effective multilateral mechanism for building mutually respectful cooperation to ensure human rights on an international legal basis. Attempts to politicize the human rights agenda, impose unilateral approaches and formulate ultimatums under the pretext of protecting human rights and moral values are unacceptable,” the statement says.

The document is planned to be sent to the United Nations, the Inter-Parliamentary Union, CSTO PA, the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly, the Latin American Parliament, PACE, OSCE PA, the European Parliament, the Asian Parliamentary Assembly, the Asia-Pacific Parliamentary Forum, the Interparliamentary Assembly on Orthodoxy, Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, PABSEC, NATO Parliamentary Assembly, and others inter-parliamentary organizations and national parliaments of the UN member states.
